The lanterns illuminated dozens of eyes glowing in the darkness. They weren’t people. They were dogs. Lots of dogs. Some thin, some injured, several elderly ones barely able to stand. Among them were cats and, in one corner, two small, frightened deer that someone had rescued some time ago.
None of them showed any aggression. When they saw Lidia enter, they all started wagging their tails and approaching her.
